Naxos is the biggest island of the Cyclades, situated in the centre of the Aegean sea it was centre of attraction of people. The island is 30 by 20 klms and 430 sq/klms.The length of its coast is 148 klms with variety of terrain from rocky to sandy from mountainous to flatland. It is traversed by mountainous chain from north to south and its peak mountain Zas reaches 1003 mtrs. The land of Naxos is very fertile thus making the island self sufficient. They produce oil,wine vegetables,fruits and the famous potato.There are local farms with sheep,goat and cows and a healthy dairy product activity cheeses etc. Naxos has also minerals like the famous marble and smyrida. The central position attracted various inhabitants to the island. The first known residents were from Thrace about 3000bc then the island went under the domination of the Cretans, many sculptures show that this was one influence that lasted for very long. Because of its rich land and position it was dominated by Athenians, Spartans, Egyptians, Macedonians and finally Romans. The Byzantines followed and the Franks and the last the Turks. All these left their mark in the civilization and culture of the island which can be easily seen in the artifices statues handicraft and craft of the island. Today tourism is a major part of the islands growth. Some sites are indicated for visitation which you will find interesting if you wish to sightsee. |
