Naxos, the principal and largest island of the Cyclades is situated in the centre of the Aegean sea. The island is 30 by 20 klms and 430 sq/klms. The length of its coast is 148 klms with variety of terrain from rocky to sandy from mountainous to flatland. It is navigated by a mountainous chain from north to south. Its peak mountain Zas reaches 1003 mtrs.

The land of Naxos is very fertile which affords the island to be self sufficient. Produce from the island includes: oil, wine, vegetables, fruits and their famed tasty potatoes. There are local farms with sheep, goats and cows, and, a bonus array of healthy dairy products which include incredibly delicious cheeses. In addition, Naxos has minerals like the well-known Marble and Smyrida (Emery).

The island is centrally located, thus making it easy to attract various inhabitants over the years. The first known residents were from Thrace about 3000bc, then the island found itself under the domination of the Cretans, many sculptures depict the many years of influence thrown upon the Greeks. Since the land was rich and its position ideal, it continued to be dominated by Athenians, Spartans, Egyptians, Macedonians and Romans; followed by, the Byzantines, the Franks and lastly the Turks. Every one of these occupants left their mark in the civilization and culture of the island, of which can be seen in the artifices, statues, handicrafts and the way of life on the island.

Past, present and definitely the future embraces tourism as a major part of the islands' growth.
